Comment on Stress Management for Dummies: 7 Tips To Help You Keep Life In Perspective by Silvia

This post makes me think of Naikan. Naikan is a Japanese word which means "inside looking" or "introspection." A more poetic translation is "seeing oneself with the mind's eye." It is a structured method of self- reflection that helps us to understand ourselves, our relationships and the fundamental nature of human existence.

Naikan reflection is based on three questions:

- What have I received from ..........?

- What have I given to ..........?

- What troubles and difficulties have I caused ..........?
(...)
If we resent it when people do not fulfill our expectations, we live as if we deserve whatever we want. As we reflect on our relationships, one by one, we begin to see the reality of our life. What is more appropriate - to go through life with the mission of collecting what is owed us, or to go through life trying to repay our debt to others? Even if you think you know the answer, it is not the same as discovering the answer

Naikan broadens our view of reality. It's as if, standing on top of a mountain, we shift from a zoom lens to a wide-angle lens. Now we can appreciate the broader panorama - our former perspective still included, but accompanied by much that had been hidden. And that which was hidden makes the view extraordinary.

http://www.todoinstitute.org/naikan.html

...

Naikan is a wonderful practice of gratitude that leads to hapiness.

Hi Right Brained Gal,

Thank you for participating.

What I would say to you is that you have decided to do something, but commitment is proven through action. Right now you are romancing the idea, and what you need to do is start dating it. For one thing don't connect the two necessarily, because a day where you get one done is better than not getting either done.

I assume that perfection in execution is not why you decided to add these two practices to your life. You need to reconnect on a daily basis to the reasons why you think yoga and meditation will add value to your life.

When you connect to the excitement and enthusiasm within your heart, you will act and get the benefits and enjoyment that come from the two practices.

If you are not connected to the value that the two offer, you will continue to find it hard to be committed, because they will always seem like two more things to do in a day that is already full of activity.

Just something to think about.

I look forward to hearing from you more in the future.

Be well,
Mario ;-)

I have made a commitment to do yoga and meditate every day, but I have the hardest time following through with it. I waste so much time surfing the web, when I should be doing what makes me feel so much better. I have to figure out why I sabotage myself by spending so much time on the internet, when I could be contributing to making my life better. I have made a promise to myself that I will start the day with yoga and meditation before I even turn on the computer.

This year I made the commitment to transform my health and fitness for the better. I have had to tell others that there are times when I will not be eating out, and when I do, I always do it on my terms.

At home I often make my own individual meals, because I am not trying to impose my decision upon anyone else. Improving my health and fitness is one of the gifts I am finally giving to myself.

What are you going to do?

Hi Janice,

Welcome aboard. I agree with you 100%. Maya Angelou is one of the most heartfelt people I have ever heard. Her poetry and prose touches the heart and teaches people how to better appreciate life.

Thank for sharing your joy and enthusiasm!

Hi Doug,

Thank you for the feedback. I could not agree more about movies and great lives being similar, because we are all living out the story of our beliefs everyday, and if we want our story to have a good ending, we need to raise our level of belief and expectation.

I took a quick trip over to your website and I find it very interesting. Often I find quotes more interesting and compelling than other prose, because a good quote often gets to the point and connects with the heart quicker than even the best written prose. Some of my favorite quotes are like little pills of instant insight.

I look forward to hearing more from you in the future, and I also look forward to taking a deeper look at your site.

Thanks for participating,
Mario ;-)

I share your belief that life is as good as you make it. I use a movie metaphor on my Reel Life Wisdom site that suggests each person is the director and star of their own life's movie. Great movies and great lives have three things in common - a defined lead character, an interesting story, and a colorful supporting cast.

I appreciate your perspective.

[...] Today, I have officially changed my mind, and before this essay is done, I am sure some of you will think I am off my rocker. But that is ok, because as I told you before in my essay “The Value of Opinions”, never value another’s opinion over the truth of who you are. [...]
